Albert Young, Interim CEO & Company Secretary
I am 54 years old, the oldest of three children, I got very sick when I was ten years of age, that was 1973. Once I recovered, my balance was off, the deterioration was quite fast and seemed to stop when I was about 18. After finishing art college, worked in various Animation studios before working in IT.
About 10 years after I got sick, my sister did too and she was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia visually within two weeks, I was told that I didn’t have ataxia and was misdiagnosed for 27 years until I was diagnosed through Genetic testing in 1997! It was a rare form of Friedreich’s Ataxia, In 2009 was diagnosed with another neurological condition Parkinsons and because of this, I now use a powered wheelchair. I am currently in the first year of a BA Degree in Disability Equality Studies with St. Angela’s College Sligo, A college of NUI Galway.
I have 44 years of experience of Disability and because of the nature of Freidreich’s Ataxia, have experienced many stages of disability along the way and want to do my part to improve the lives of disabled people in Ireland .
“I want to do what I can to improve things for people with ataxia and disabled people in general and Irish societies attitude towards it”.
